Meeting FocusThis recurring meeting has consisted of keynote lectures by eminent scientists in and outside the field of Sleep and Breathing, interspersed with presentations by junior investigators in 10 minute “abstract” form or posters. The meeting features a very high level of science combined with an intimate venue that encourages discussion at and around the sessions. Subjects include a wide range of basic, translational and clinical topics in Sleep and Breathing. The focus is on trainees and junior faculty, with senior investigators sponsoring junior investigators to present original papers and receive constructive feedback. There has been active participation from all corners of the world, encouraged by the rotation of sites for the meeting. In-person interactions between senior scientists and young investigators have made each meeting particularly memorable. The steering committee awards three prizes for the best work by junior investigators, with one named after Anne E Suratt, and in 2019 a second named in honor of Christian Guilleminault. To encourage attendance, the meeting has been heavily subsidized, initially by the NIH and other granting bodies, and more recently by generous donations from Industry.

SYMPOSIA ON SLEEP AND BREATHING
|
In April 1989, an enthusiastic group of leading scientists convened an interdisciplinary conference on Sleep and Respiration at the Banff Centre for Continuing Education in Banff, Alberta, Canada. This first meeting was organized by John Remmers, Paul Suratt and Christian Guilleminault. The objective was to promote and enhance scientific progress in this new field by creating a forum for interchange of information on a comprehensive array of topics. The Symposium spurred vigorous scientific exchange and cross fertilization of ideas which, in turn, led to new investigations and breakthrough developments. From the first, there was a strong desire by the participants to perpetuate this symposium, and it has recurred about every 24 months since, alternating among North and South America, Europe and Australasia, with the one lapse occurring due to Covid-19.
