Dr David M. RapoportProfessor of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine
Research Director of Sleep Medicine, Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai, USA David M. Rapoport, MD, is Professor of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine and Research Director of Sleep Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He was on the faculty and established the Sleep Medicine Program at NYU between 1980 to 2015 and is currently at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Dr. Rapoport’s research is in pulmonary and sleep physiology, especially control of breathing and of the upper airway, and the epidemiology, causes, consequences and treatments of sleep disordered breathing. He is a “gadgeteer” by nature and developed the nasal cannula as a flow sensor for sleep studies. |
He introduced the leak-port circuit for CPAP and non-invasive ventilation and developed research and clinical modifications to address comfort and adherence. During the Covid-19 pandemic he has worked with Fisher and Paykel Healthcare studying the generation and transmission of respiratory particles during spontaneous respiration and therapy with aerosol generating procedures, including nasal high flow, CPAP and bilevel.
Dr. Rapoport was the New York Cohort Principal Investigator of the NIH sponsored Sleep Heart Health Study, an epidemiological study of cardiovascular consequences of OSA; CATNAP, a study evaluating the benefit of CPAP in mild-moderate OSA; and PRIDE, an NHLBI program that provides mentoring to minority junior faculty in preparation for academic careers. He has participated in multiple industry-sponsored studies involving sleep and OSA. He is the founder of the Foundation for Research in Sleep Disorders, a non-profit that supports research and training in sleep medicine. He is a member of the ATS, APSS, AASM and SRS and is (co-) author of over 140 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He holds multiple US and international patents.
Dr. Rapoport has trained clinical and research fellows in Sleep Medicine at NYU and at Mount Sinai for 40 years.
